I would give this one 6 stars if I could. Absolutely brilliant!

I didn't like this volume as much as the previous ones. The author decided to take on The Iliad for Ares' story and it became a confusion of names more than once. Unless the reader is already familiar with the story, this would have been a bumbling mess. But the quality of the previous volumes is still there. Looking forward to more in the future.

[Probably more a 4.5]

I really adore this Greek myth retelling project George O'Connor is publishing, and this title is nearly as good as the best in the series. It's few problems are due more to the fact that O'Connor is boiling down Homer's Iliad into such a short space. Can't imagine how this installment will read as a standalone for kids who know nothing of the Trojan war.

Except here's the caveat: I can't imagine that there are that many kids coming to this without reading the entire series.

That's part of the genius of the thing: Because O'Connor is retelling the stories of the Olympians over the course of twelve books, the entire collection acts as one sort of mythological mega-book. The stories are bigger than any one volume. The whole series is the context here, and so it is difficult to judge any one entry on its own. He has woven details setting up the characters and each entry in the other volumes, and we do get to know these characters and recognize their behaviors.

So, for that mega-book project? Five stars. It's great. I can't wait for him to publish the next five entries so that I can go back to the start and read them again. These are way better than Edith Hamilton's hoary old anthology of tales.

Another interesting installment in the Olympians' graphic novel series. This volume focused on Ares and the gods' involvement in the Trojan War, which was started in the previous volume, Aphrodite. While I'm not partial to the bringer of war and bloodlust, it was fascinating to get a bit of insight into the mind of Ares. It also showed how petty Athena could truly be, which in my book takes her down several notches.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the next volume, Apollo, will bring.

The kids at my after school program love these comics about the Greek pantheon. They're pretty good! Probably the only media about the Greek gods that's low-effort enough for me to want to consume.
