informative

Divided into tiny alphabetical chunks and personal stories, this book is easy to pick up and put down based on the needs of the reader. The author is affirming of the difficulties some people struggle with and has created this no nonsense guide to help. It's not a book I'd read again or study in depth but I'd recommend it to anyone who needs the occasional reminder to look after themselves.

A few gems, here and there, but overall underwhelming

This was such a great book! I loved reading bits and pieces of it on a (nearly) daily basis. It's so nice to have this discussion of self-care in the back of your head when you're going about your day. Even if you already know a lot of this, it's still nice to just be reminded of the ways you can take care of yourself.

What I really enjoyed is that the author talks about how self-care can often exclude people of non-white races, people with disabilities, people of different sexual orientations. Basically that self-care is pretty much promoted to "fit" cis-gendered straight white women. She talks about how my self-care is different from yours and emphasizes this by including blurbs from a wide variety of people about what self-care looks like to them.

(ps, the book itself is just adorable.)

(pps, I just realized I probably loved this because the author and I are both INFJs and Enneagram type 4s)

Absolutely recommend!

DID NOT FINISH

genuinely can’t finish this but i feel like.. i get it lol
inspiring reflective relaxing slow-paced

Simple, easy read, intuitive, and a great resource to have on your shelf for those days when you want to do something for yourself. Flow chart in the back of the book is awesome so you can ask yourself what type of self-care you need at that time and the author points you to specific sections of the book for ideas that would work for your current mood. Very cool book!

I enjoyed this. It's a beautiful book - sturdy hard cover, with lots of color, illustrations, and quotes. The content is useful, but not the be all and end all for me. There were definitely things that resonated with me-anger as a defense mechanism, CBT distraction skills, radical acceptance. I think this could be a great place to start for someone having mental health/self-acceptance issues, and it does have further reading and resources. Having started my self-help/self-care journey with a book that really really applied to me (The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron), it was hard to go from that to a more general approach. That being said, if you're looking for a starting place for self-care, whether you're dealing with anxiety or depression or just malaise, this is a great book.
slow-paced

For someone who is looking for a concise and realistic overview of the types of self care out there, this is a fantastic book. It provides a great starting point to a multitude of tools one can use to develop a self care routine meaningful to them; I particularly appreciate the lack of expensive and unrealistic solutions that can often propagate other well being books.

While I did get a few new ideas out of this book, it felt more like an overview of things I already knew, which is the reason for the 4 star rating.
