The end of another series for me and my biggie, not sure what we'll try next.
'The Golden Tower' is the conclusion to Cassandra Clare and Holly Black's 'Magisterium' series. In this instalment we find Call and Tamara back at school at the Magisterium for their final year, the gold year. They are hoping after defeating Alex Strike that the year will be uneventful, though Call is keeping a secret from Tamara, Aaron isn't really dead, he's now inside Call. To make matters worse, Alex isn't dead either, he returns from the void as a devoured of chaos, ready to wreak havoc and take his revenge on Call, Tamara, Jasper and the Magisterium.

I find these books cute little reads to enjoy with my son. Do I think these are masterpieces? Would I read them on my own? Do I ever see myself rereading these? No to all of them. but I did enjoy them. There was a lot of predictable stuff, the whole needing to find Aaron a body, Jasper and Gwenda getting together. I found the relationships between the kids amusing and childish but funny in the end, I don't know if I felt much of a connection between Call and Tamara but I did enjoy the teen angst coupled with having your best friend witnessing everything front and centre in your head. It kept the book very light and airy. Probably too light but it's a nice foil against some of the other stuff I read. Multiple people die/change forever in the series including more than a few in this book. Alistair, Call's father becomes a devoured of air, devoured are normally on the run, hiding, or locked up. Call does express feelings more than once on this but they never seem to have the weight I felt like it should. Its odd how much death is glossed over, that older girl, Master Jospeh, his son, one of the masters, just to name a few and their deaths are mentioned and then we keep going, they are just facts of life, but Aaron's death controls half the books, Call's actions are completely influenced by his death. It's just odd to me.
Another thing I found was the introduction of the new big bad. It was almost like they were setting up for a spin off and a second series. Constantine Madden has finally be defeated, because surprise he was defeated ages ago but an ancient even more evil Makar. They did incorporate him well, It seemed like it could have been possible based on what we knew of Constantine, it didnt change any facts established in the early books but it felt odd to introduce him part way through the final book, and then did Call and Aaron actually defeat him? or is he just biding his time in Call's head? I don't remember him being pushed out. It also seemed way to easy for this supreme evil that I would have thought would be able to out wit and match two half trained teenagers.

It was a little harder to immerse myself in this book than the others. I liked the book and it was pretty good. It did feel a bit rushed to me, but Holly Black could probably phone in a book and it would still be a decent read.

A good ending to this series with potential for future novels. Great characters and well written. This one is also a bit dark for middlegrade though not as dark as 4. Overall a good series that's really better than Harry Potter with much more well rounded and realistic characters.
