Another exciting entry in this middle grade series. This is the final book as Call graduates the Magisterium but I'm really hoping they follow them into the Collegium where I don't doubt they'll wind up causing mayhem.

This book, and I guess the series overall, is. 2.5 rounded up. I think there are some really good ideas bogged down by a weird idea of middle-grade humor. For all the talk about what makes us good versus evil, and what is life, what do we lose at death, the stakes never felt serious for what they were dealing with. Overall, I think each book in the series could have been a bit longer to expand on these ideas. And the ending itself, the last paragraph, felt really ominous for the end of the series. It just didn't sit right with me.

A good wrap up for the series.

The final part got too close to the source of its derivation, Harry Potter. I have read Clare's books and I have read Black's books individually and for the most part, they rock. The stars this book even got was for Alastair's sacrifice, but more than Harry Potter, I felt like this book showed me a polished version of the golden trio with the character similarities to that in the cursed child I blatantly hate.

This book for all its splendour was underwhelming and disappointing to me. Maybe I'm in a reading slump but I think I could muster more excitement for the final book a series I have waited years for. I read the fifth and final book in the trials of Apollo a while ago and it was amazing. So, maybe I could've said it's not you, it's me, but that would be a lie.

Yes, all happy endings, Alex dealt with and gone but what about maugris?
