i love nussbaum’s writing & this was no exception! very fun to follow, even if at times the names got confusing. i enjoyed the exploration of the show survival especially. some unexpected choices (it was odd that the kardashians were more of a footnote than was trump) but a success overall!

I don’t consider myself a huge reality tv fan, but reading this book made me realize how much reality tv really has impacted the shows I’ve watched over the years as a Millennial. I think that contributed to how much I enjoyed this book, it felt like a walk down memory lane from America’s Funniest Home Videos to Real World and the first seasons of Survivor and the Bachelorette, which I watched with my mom. I’m truly impressed by the amount of research that went into this book and the hours of footage the author must’ve watched. Overall an interesting read and theory of where reality tv came from and the consequences it has had not only on the industry, but on society as a whole.

3.5 stars—This was a little dry, and to be completely transparent, I skimmed parts that didn’t interest me as much, but it was very well researched and written.

If you would have asked me if I watched a lot of early reality tv, I would have said ‘no way.’ But, I have definitely watched some parts of most shows mentioned in this novel—very eye-opening!
