This was a fun read, but it took a while to get into. I think I just spent the first little bit so frustrated with Finlay that it was hard to get into, but as things progressed, I started to like her more. The plot itself was way over the top and there are still things that don't make a whole lot of sense to me, but I'll be honest that the ending was surprising enough that I'll keep reading the series.

While I have seen this book make the rounds in goodreads, I never felt the urge to pick it up. The modern cozy mystery didn't seem like a me thing. Fortunately/unfortunately, it was selected for book club this month. Talk about a pleasant surprise.
Finlay Donovan is a divorced mom of two and life is not going so great until she is mistaken as a hitman in a Panera. On the hunt for a plot for her new book and a hefty dose of curiosity, Finlay finds herself entwined in a murder plot related to the mob.
Finlay Donovan #1 is like a breath of fresh air. The writing may be a little on the basic side, but it contributes to the character's voice and plot points perfectly.
On the note of characters; these are some of the best-written characters that I've read in a  LONG time.  I knew every single character so well by the end of the book-even secondary characters. They are so well-developed, and each has such funny, familiar quirks. In some ways, the book felt so familiar to me.
The plot was an absolute delight the way it unfolded. I laughed out loud once, literally.
I highly recommend this absolute treasure to any and all. No trigger warnings and practically a comedic, cozy mystery.
