I really enjoyed reading this. I had watched the movie way before I ever read the book and I can say that if you can't reasonably keep the movie out of your head while reading this then you won't enjoy it. The book and movie are almost nothing alike. Some of the names are the same, but it all (except for the vacation) takes place in Ireland. No one is from America in this. But that doesn't mean that one or the other are bad because of it. The book has so much more depth than the movie and that's just because it's a book. Plus if Hollywood does anything it has to Americanize it some how. So just bear all that in mind when you go to read this book. Both are good but very different.

Interesting premise but the book could have used an editor with a heavier hand. A lot of expository (telling) writing and a fair amount of distracting head hopping. The end felt as though the author acknowledged that at 400 pages (with 70 pages to go) she'd beat wrap up the narrative and wrap it up fast, which is to say the end feels rushed and hastily resolved.

P.S I love you Cecilia Ahern.... your book always amaze me :)

Twas a solid “meh” for me. Many of the characters, especially Holly, came off as very vapid, rude, and spoiled. She treated her friends and family horribly. I know the author was young when she wrote this, and it very much shows. I wish that there was more depth to her relationship with Gerry because he was the only character that I actually cared about and we got so little of him. It could have been so much more emotionally-charged than it was.

Writing-wise, my gripes are:

1. I dislike how the author would jump to different POVs without any transitions or warnings, as that was a tad confusing.

2. There was no build up or real climax to the story? Events just…happened.. and then the book ended.

Idk. I just feel like the concept had so much promise but the execution fell flat for me.

Great message over all. But I cried the whole book it seemed!

Beautifully written. I laughed, I cried, and most importantly I read. Such a wonderful book!

After being obsessed with the movie for months, I decided to take the plunge and read the book. Finally. And I can tell you that the book was equally as satisfying but completely different to the Gerard Butler perv-fest that I so dearly love.

There were so many changes made to translate this book to film. I won't go into them all here now because I wouldn't want to ruin it but let's just say they were significant. From love interests to careers, everything was different. And for that reason, I think I probably did it the right way round watching the movie first and reading the book second.
I'm giving it 4 stars for because Cecilia Ahern is just so easy to read. It requires no effort to get into a rhythm and it's the perfect little book to pick up when you're in between epics. She tackles grief without making you feel life is pointless. There is always hope. And I think that's what Gerry gives Holly in her first year without him - hope for a new life.

I'd say this little story gave me a similar feel-good feeling to The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. It didn't matter that it was tragic, it still managed to really touch me. Really it was beautiful.

Read this novel if: You're looking for something inbetween other books and don't want to have to work too hard to enjoy the characters.
Don't read this novel if: You think you could feel disconcerted or upset by the intense, overwhelming grief Holly is struggling to come to terms with.
