I enjoyed this second book in the Immortals series just as much as the first. I like Daine even more, if that is possible. Her faults as well as her can-do, unafraid attitude make her an excellent heroine to read. I will definitely be following her into the next book.

My only complaint, again, would be her age. She acts a lot older than she is. And I am pretty sure now, after Numair (sorta) saves her in the end that he is the romantic interest. But he's pretty old compared to her and she's only fourteen in this book. I wish Pierce had made her sixteen in this book so by the time the fourth book comes around she's a much more reasonable age for a romance with Numair. Not that I can't suspend belief enough for it to happen, but it's kind of gross. So in my head, I have to think her older or him considerably younger.

Daine is called to come help right the problems of her old wolf pack. Daine discovers rebellion is planned in the area and must undertake to take down the magical shield surrounding the rebelling area, with the help of animals, local humans, ogres and some immortals, to let Alanna, Numair and reinforcements in to deal with the Cartharki mages and local rebellion forces.

Daine is a further developed, becoming cranky when she has to take care of a younger girl running away from the rebelling castle. She also has to overcome her own prejudice against Stormwings, and deal with her own fears as she masters magic given by the badger god.

This book was just as good or better than the last one with many new and already established characters that add so much to the story. I loved the characters especially Daine and Numair they both add so much to the story with Daine learning more about her abilities and Numair being a great mentor all throughout this. There are many characters here that add so much like Maura a spirited little girl the many animals in the story especially the wolves also the cats they add so much to the story. The story was a great action-packed with Daine and the group meeting up with the wolves to help they find out someone is planning to overthrow the Tortall king so her and the group stop all that make friends along the way and learn more about herself. I will be reading more soon.

I'm really enjoying this series and have liked seeing Daine grow into her powers, but also mature as a person. The creatures in this world are so interesting and I love how the Basilisk is not the evil creature it normally is in many fantasy series. The full cast audio doesn't always work for this series (some of the voices I don't like), but it's still an entertaining listen. I plan on continuing with the series in the near future.

My inner nine-year-old wishes she'd read this book so as to incorporate it into her lush make-believe world. A fun time! Who doesn't love magic that involves talking with, becoming, and befriending animals?

Entertaining, and a fun premise because deep down, dint we all want to do the bidding of animals for the forces of good and have them reciprocate?! Or is that just me? I’ve warmed up to the main character and the style of the authors writing and really looking forward to continuing this series to see what the next perils are that Daine and her crew need to save the world from itself.

I liked this book even more than the first in the series. It's clear the Immortals books will be marked by a memorable main character and a puckish sense of humor that's all too rare in YA books--they tend to be either melodramatic or snarky.

Every animal in this book is a distinct personality. Unlike many "talking animals" books, however, they behave as their species behaves (at least, as it would if it met someone like Daine who could introduce new thoughts into its mind).

The human villains are much less developed than the animal characters, unfortunately. But I did give a cheer when they were defeated, less for the fact that they lost than for the way every creature, from an eagle to a mouse, did what it could to help Daine and her wolf-pack save the day.

This is such an underrated series that I wish more people read but I also greedily keep it to myself.

I just reread Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness Quartet and was sad that they didn't quite hold up to the glory of the memories my 10 year old self had formed. Happily, the Immortals Quartet is still as enjoyable as I remember them being when I first read them 16 years ago. :)

This is a book I would have loved to read in my teens. Daine is fourteen and very much transitioning between child and young adult, learning that not everything it black and white. I enjoyed the character progression and the development of new powers.
