Re-read continues!! Daine is so funny, I really enjoy reading it. I remember totally loving the wolves and her reaction with them. She finally knows all of her powers!.... well, mostly.
On to the next one~

This really is a perfect YA/middle grade series for a certain kind of outdoorsy-yet-bookish kid. No wonder I loved it so much as a child.

Maybe it’s just because of my current interest in nature writing and acting in the interest of not just humans, but man I enjoyed this one a lot. I relate to Daine, probably too much.

So heavy-handed with the environmental, interspecies unity themes. Bright spots include
Numair waxing academic at every chance he gets, plus all the different animals who are given voices in this book. It's actually crazy to me that this book, out of the whole series, has the most action from Daine's most beloved animal friends,
because otherwise I don't think this book is notably enjoyable at all. On every reread I want to skip it, and every time I just power through and read it anyway, I'm glad I did because
who'd want to miss the Long Lake Pack's antics, Cloud's common sense advice, and that sassy little marmot?

Idk maybe I like this book least because it's where Daine is the most insufferable... I hate how she treats Maura, it feels so un-Dainelike, that she's so kind and patient with animals and so annoyed by a 10 year old girl.

An okay follow-up to Tamora Pierce's earlier novel Wild Magic. I liked that Pierce went out of her way to emphasize that not all creatures who look like monsters are evil, but this was kind of a weird message in a novel where the human villains lack any kind of shading to their characters -- they're rude to Daine, they're destroying animal habitats with their industry, and they're plotting a rebellion against the king (for no deeper reason than that they want to be on the throne instead). I also wasn't thrilled with the expansion of Daine's magic, which apparently lets her instantly befriend any animal, enter into its mind to control its body, AND shapeshift her own body to resemble it. Hopefully the further books in this series do something to scale that back, because in this adventure she's simply too overpowered for anything to ever seem like a credible obstacle.

"Wolf-Speaker" has always been my least favorite of the Immortals Quartet, that being said it's still really good, just not the best
