Again, this is a more personal than objective review...not that any of my reviews are ever really objective :) I didn't get into this character, even though there were some sweet moments in the book. I felt like it was too much information and not enough action (in the middle of the book), then too much action and not enough emotion at the end of the book.
3,5* Daine er alt for overpowered og møder ikke rigtig nogle store problemer som man er bange for, at hun ikke kan overkomme, hvilket fjerner lidt af spændingen.

Tamora Pierce delivers a delightful adventure in the Northern Tortallan fief of Dunlath, with Daine starting to hone her powers and grow into a mage in her own right.
Okay, this one is maybe not as strong as some of the other books in this series. And I am not into this new cover at all--I enjoyed the original covers far more.
I’m continuing on with Pierce’s Immortals series, and I must say, I liked this book more than the first. Daine seemed to be more confident and active, with a few new surprises about her powers along the way. The plot was also tighter than the previous book, which I liked. The only drawbacks, I think, are going to be due to personal taste: I tend to have a preference for female fantasy characters in more knightly roles, and this book tends more towards magic and spying. It is still a wonderful adventure, and I think anyone with an interest in female magic-users will have a good time.
Things I Liked
1. Daine’s Development: I really liked Daine’s development in this book, not just the moments where she learned about her new abilities, but when she learned about her own biases. There are moments when Daine declares her dislike for Stormwings and labels them as evil based on the way they look and act and smell. Several times, characters challenge her on judging them for acting according to their nature, which leads her to learn about her own tendencies to paint populations with a broad brush. Other characters follow her in this, such as Maura, who learns that everything she was told about wolves and ogres was wrong. I thought it was a wonderful, subtle commentary on how it’s unfair to see groups of people or creatures as a monolith or as inherently bad.
2. Plot: More so than the previous book, I felt that this book had a definite arc and focus. There is something going on in Dunlath that threatens the kingdom and the wildlife, and Daine is determined to know what it is. Having a goal like this helps me follow the through-lines of the narrative, and gives me a sense of purpose when reading. I enjoy having some problem I look forward to solving.
3. Animals: All of the animals in this book were delightful. I loved their names, their personalities, and the eagerness to form friendships with Daine. I especially loved the dragon, Kitten, who makes cute little chirps and trills - she just melted my heart.
Things I Didn’t Like
1.Repetition of Structure: I moved somewhat slowly through this book because despite having a goal, the structure of the plot tended to be repeated often. Some info would be revealed, and Daine would jump into the mind of animal, learn or do something, and the cycle would start again. Although each new animal Daine enters would help Daine learn something new about her abilities, I ultimately felt that the narrative repetition slowed down the pace.
Recommendations: I would recommend this book if you’re interested in spying, stealth, rogue-like characters, animal magic, talking with animals, and shape-shifting.

Daine is one of my favorite characters from Tamora Pierce's books. I love animals, and her gifts are things I always dreamed about when I was that age.
Tamora Pierce rocks the middle-grade fantasy genre. That is all.
