3.5

I was intrigued to read this one after being introduced to Beatryce, the heroine, in the previous book, where she was one of the villains and a truly terrible person. I love a good redemption arc, and it's rare to find one in the form of a woman villain.
Beatryce continues to be horrible for quite a while, but we also start to learn more about who she is and how she came to be the bad guy. She is unlikable in a lot of ways, a downright asshole sometimes. She is a pro at provoking even the hero, Cliff, who is known for being universally kind and patient. It's a total mismatch of a pairing, but by the end of the book I was sold on rooting for their HEA.
There are some very dark elements to Beatryce's story, so I likely won't be running back to this one for repeated readings, but it was a well done play on the redeemed villain trope.
Long live Aunt Harriet and The Umbrella.
