Such a great story and a wonderful human being that it’s based on. The writing isn’t superb but the story makes it worth it to read and know the history - it’s important. I couldn’t believe that his own kids never learned to speak Navajo! I loved that at the first ceremony to help him deal with the nightmares of war that he was surrounded with so many people and “everyone brought kindness, compassion, and goodwill.” Just imagine how many nightmares we could solve if everyone were to bring that with them everywhere they go.

Super interesting! The Navajo code had a huge impact on the war and for it to be kept secret for so long must have been such a challenge.

Interesting story of war from a new perspective.

More of an overview of his life with a focus on his war years, but still a very interesting read

Excellent book! I learned so much about the Navajo people and also about WWII. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about people and their lives in different times and places.

Historically speaking, this is one of the largely overlooked contributing factors to why the Allies were so successful in certain venues of the war. The real unfortunate portion is that due to the secret nature of how it needed to be handled, many Native Americans were not able to be honored during their life for their service. This book delves deeply into the story of the Navajo code talkers and how the code they developed and employed helped to sway a number of battles. But more so, it gives a nice depth to their culture and how they view the world. Solid read that is well told.
