If Vampire Mountain was shift for the series, than this is just as big, if not bigger. Reading through these again, it's easier to pick out just how much Darren as a character has changed since the first book. There's a momentum to this whole project that just doesn't let up, and it's wholly unpredictable, especially for audience it's aiming for. I'm glad that this has completely held up thus far and more than rose-tinted glasses is keeping me going.

Not as good as the last few in the series, but interesting new characters and plot development.

This was a slower read but much is revealed about the coming end. Darren's grown up so much that he's almost unrecognizable to those he's left behind... almost.

Summary: The pursuit begins…

Darren Shan, the Vampire Prince, leaves Vampire Mountain on a life or death mission.

As part of an elite force, Darren searches the world for the Vampaneze Lord. But the road ahead is long and dangerous - and lined with the bodies of the damned.

What I liked about this book: This one did not take as long to read but it felt a bit forced. New characters are introduced that, I hope will have an impact on Darren's life as he progresses through this quest... this hunt he's now a part of and while they're interesting, they're not as captivating as some of the other characters we've met along the way. Perhaps this will change in the coming books.

I had trouble with the timeline of this book since I kept thinking that Darren had been blooded at 16 but in this book, it sounds like he was even younger. 12 or younger. In one exchange he even mentions finally being able to reach his teens and in another exchange he describes himself as having been a child for 25 years. Not sure if this included his first life as well as his half-vampire life or not and there lies the confusion.

We see Darren begin his journey as a hunter (and the hunted) and as a man. His thoughts are more mature than they once were and we see him come to terms with his immortality. It was a good read, but the age thing and the introduction of Lady Evanna into the mix has really thrown me for a loop. I'm hoping the next book is as exciting as #5 and #6 were.

Another blazing entry into the perfect summer saga. Destiny, puberty(?), and danger collide in this rapid-fire entry.

Another 6 years have passed and things are not going well in the world of vampires, I'm still enjoying the series, like the new characters and like getting to spend time with some old characters, not my favourite of the series though.

So many reasons as to why this book was another big letdown.
1. The first part where Darrens practices being a prince is completely useless and ridiculous. Luckily, we got rid of that rather quickly.
2. Des-Tiny coming in with his weird half-prophecy-half-command is kinda deux-ex-machina, and hosh I hate that.
3. Departure and meeting up with Vanchard is fun. Lady Evanna is a real joy. Although Darren didnt learn any useful thing from his time with Vanchard, which is a waste in my opinion.
4. Reunion with Cirque du Freak is just exactly what I need. Needless to say, that saves the whole book. And I dont really care much about the twist at the end. Still, I’m curious to see how that plays out in the future.

I enjoyed the mystery and build up for next books. Also the time jump seemed like a good but not that important part.
