OOF.
This is beautfully, beautifully written, but god it was hard work. I listened to the audiobook, which is very well done, I just had to keep stopping it to catch my breath.
I knew this w0uld be difficult in the sense that it's about assault (it's also about healing!), however, I didn't think this would be quite so hard. I'm not sure I knew what I was getting in to, but this made me SO angry, which it should, it should make everyone angry.
Anyway - the constant unfolding is both clever and uncomfortable and intense and interesting and terrifying.
I think this is a book worth your time if you know what you're getting into.
TW: sexual assault, trauma, PTSD, bullying, homophobia, racism, classism, intimidation.

This book was hard to read in the best way. I loved the setting and can confirm that San Juan Capistrano was well-represented :) Also, the Latinx culture was woven throughout instead of being tacked on and the queer identities felt complicated and real. I didn't see the retelling coming through, but I'm not as familiar with the original so that could be on me. I also felt like the author was trying to do a bit too much with this one. There were so many storylines and subtle fantasy elements that I got a little lost in it all. I still loved it though. The romance was heartbreaking because of the circumstances and the twists kept me on the edge of my plane seat.

CW: Sexual assault, PTSD, blackmailing and bullying.

This was a very difficult topic to read about and I think McLemore did it justice; this is a needed book in our society today. Using beautiful prose the author integrates gender, sexuality and racial conflicts into the novel. The characters felt so real with so many layers that were explored as the story progressed.

This was my first Anna-Marie McLemore novel and I'm excited to pick up more.
