Interesting look at how circumstances throw people together. I like the unspoken, unknown bits that the readers learn but the characters don't know. The statue was also really interesting and made me want to have it... oh where or where can I get that statue?? Love the location, too Hello Boston!! Otherwise the characters were really disappointing to me. They were a little flat and perhaps too cliche. The ending disappointing as well - a little too predictable from someone who is good at surprises. Overall a decent read.

Great writing, and flawed but likeable characters. I enjoyed reading it.

Most of the action in this book takes place in a condensed period of time (24 hours), and as a result, it feels somewhat exhausting. It's hard to understand people who are tired and lay down to sleep in the wee hours of the morning, but who are then wide awake and undertake an illogical journey or errand in adverse weather conditions (huge snowstorm), and even more confusing when one of those people has just broken their ankle and is on crutches. So the actions of this book defy logic. That's a strange aspect to this otherwise rewarding book.

The characters are well-defined and are all redeeming (there's not much dysfunction in this book), so it's "nice" to read. If anything, Kenya (the young girl) is a bit Too Nice - and sometimes wavers on the edge of being incredible, to wit: although raised in abject poverty she can play Debussey on the piano.

The outcome isn't what I expected, although I wouldn't say it was anything like a plot twist.

Enjoyable to read, somewhat engrossing, moments of brillant writing, but in the end, I'm afraid I will forget it.

well written, interesting premise. Fun that it was set in Boston and I could identify with the neighborhoods.

waste of time from an author who i so admire. trite, predictable, simplistic.

Not a perfect book....some too good to be true characters, and a pat ending, but I was engaged in the story nonetheless.

I really got sucked in to this book. Is it believable? No. Does it tie up too neatly? Yes. But sometimes I just want a good story with characters that are sympathetic, and I genuinely liked almost everyone in this book. At the end of the day I love how she writes and I can forgive her a lot. I want a side novel to explore more about Tennessee and her friend, but Ann Patchett is probably not the best one to write that.
