Run

Ann Patchett

I listened to this book on audio, so that may have skewed my perception of it, but I didn't really like it. I went back and forth between wow I really like this book and this book is dragging and boring. That is why I gave it 3 stars. Thinking back, I felt about the same as Bell Canto. However, oddly I like Ann Patchett as an author. The way she writes is interesting, I think I just found the story dry and unbelievable. The end is what I was waiting for a few chapters into the book. I would have liked to learn more about what happened after Tennessee's death than only in the last chapter.

I liked the first half of the book a lot, but it gets really slow on the second half

I had finally read Bel Canto last year, and I really wished I'd read it sooner. It was such an amazing work, and although I haven't gotten around to reading anything else by her yet, I got the chance to read this one pretty soon after it came out. I expected something if not as good as Bel Canto, at least comparable, but I was disappointed.
It was a pretty quick read, but I found myself finishing the book just for the sake of finishing it. There was something about the pacing that bothered me that I can't quite put my finger on, and I think that Patchett is capable of showing human connections that run much deeper than they did in this novel. As another reviewer stated, it felt as though she was only scratching the surface of these characters - they didn't have nearly as much depth as they were capable of having.
Overall, the story was an interesting one, and it has a lot of potential to be a great novel - it just doesn't quite get there.

Maybe my favorite adoption novel ever

It amazes me how different Ann Patchett’s book are, and this is no exception. The overall plot of a girl’s mother getting hit by a car and how it weaves many lives together was simple and yet complicated at the same time. It wasn’t my favorite Patchett, but I was intrigued enough that it was very easy to just keep reading to figure out how it was all going to turn out, which, while predictable in some ways, was also satisfying.

Run is a story about found family, of regretting past decisions, of hope, fragility of human beings, and of a parents love for their children.

When Tip steps out into the snow filled street, he doesn't realize he is stepping in front of a car. A woman pushes him from behind, keeping him from danger, but getting hit herself. This action starts the 24-hour story a Boston family with secrets.[return][return]Overall enjoyed it.

Another winner from the author of Bel Canto. Although the plot is predictable and some of the characters are a bit unrealistic, Ann Patchett's prose is compulsively readable and she poses some very timely (to me) questions about the nature of sacrifice. How far would you go to provide a better life for your children? Do grief and regret mark the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood? What is the best way to help the common person?

Pretty solid book! I like her writing style and it's easy to become attached to her characters even though the narration jumps between them.
