A really enjoyable read. The author of Bel Canto weaves a fast-paced story about race relations, politics, adoption quagmires, family disfunctions. I most enjoyed her writing style -- it is both hypnotic and melodic.

Ann Patchett’s writing style just gets me in my feelings. The dialogues, the themes, the settings, etc… stunning. I was very, VERY emotionally invested in each of the characters. Still, this wasn’t a perfect read for me. I felt like there was a slight white savior complex that repeatedly bubbled up - a black women can’t safely raise their babies but an aging, white, male politician can? For a book that so heavily focuses on matriarchies and the importance of mothers, I also found it frustrating that none of them made it to the finish line.
So far this is fantastic. Typical Ann Patchett in that the characters are really rich and complex. I'm thinking Steve Bassett and Lynn Coriano would enjoy this book.... :)
Ann Patchett isn't one author I often grab from as I've had a feeling that I'm not a huge fan of her writing. Haven't checked which I've read and how I rated them in a while. I decided to give her an another go and I'm glad I did. Familyesce dramas is one of my favorite and this one was a tricky one and intriguing to read about. Hard to put down. Maybe I'll should give her more tries as I might have had gotten the wrong idea about her writing
The first chapter of this book was printed as a short story in the New Yorker, so it was nice to see what Patchett did with the characters. It's well told, well constructed and a fast read. It was both satisfying and quick, which is not always possible.
I enjoyed reading this story since I was interested in the characters and their backstories. It was good entertainment but I don’t think this story is one that’s going to stick with me.
