OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!!!! What a thrill ride! I will tell you that it did take a bit of commitment to get into the book. Once I hit about the half-way point, I needed to hold on to my hat.

I will be looking for more of Harper McClain in the future.

My thanks to netgalley and Minotaur Books for this advanced readers copy.

I received this book as an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

The Echo Killing, Daugherty's first crime novel, is the story of crime reporter Harper McClain who arrives at the scene of a murder that feels all too familiar: could it possibly be that her mother's murderer, silent for fifteen years, has struck again?! The synopsis immediately intrigued me although I realised once I got a few pages in that I'd initially thought Harper would be a detective rather than a reporter, and was a little disappointed at first. I also wondered how Daugherty might work that angle, with reporter access to criminal information being restricted, but she circumvented it nicely. I was ultimately thankful for the extra dimension of Harper not being a detective actually.

There's been a bit of a gap between me reading the book and writing this review, having read a couple of books in between, and I've realised I enjoyed it more than I initially thought. It's somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4, rather than a 3. The twists and turns were suspenseful and I was constantly thinking 'Is it you?!' with each character. The backdrop of Savannah, Georgia is a good one and Harper is a likeable character, who you feel a little protective of because she grew up without her mother and not much of a relationship with her father. Speaking of which, there were some parts of the story that frustrated me, namely her interaction with her father and the investigative lengths she will go to but perhaps that was deliberate to illustrate her desperation.

I hadn't fully expected the ending and whilst I cannot say the entire story gripped me, it definitely became a bit of a pageturner towards the end. It left me curious about what will happen to Harper next, and some of the other characters, so I would read the next book.

I have read quite a few “ first in a series books “ lately that have the potential to be a good, and I think this is one of them. I liked the backstory on Harper immediately, and to have the murder in this one wrapped up with the backstory as yet unsolved has me excited for the second installment.

Ätzend. Unlogisch, schlecht geschrieben, super unsymphatische Protagonistin. Und ich bin erst auf Seite drei. Es war unterhaltsamer, die Ein-Stern-Rezensionen bei goodreads zu lesen. Nope.

OH MY FREAKING GOODNESS!

The Echo Killing was so freaking good! I couldn't put it down!! I'm kind of wanting to kick myself because I feel like I should've dived right into when I first got the book.. but then life got in the way and I finally found time to read this AMAZING book and I fell in love.

Harper McClain is probably my favorite character from any book that I've read today. TODAY people! Yes, I have lots and lots of favorite characters, books, and series. I'm a fickle person and want to love everyone in the book world! Now Harper had a terrible childhood. Everything was bright, shiny, and absolutely wonderful.. until it wasn't. She came home one day to find her mother dead. Murdered. Now I have no idea what would happen to anyone in that situation.. cry, scream, be in shock for like ever. Harper called the police and was probably in shock the entire time.

Many years later, she's an adult and works as a crime reporter. She's a bad ass that has an in with cops and her fellow reporters. She is a strong and independent woman who just wants to solve her mother's case.. or at least wants it solved. She also has a whole lot of feelings for a guy that she can't be with... for some odd reason.

Harper see's a murder scene that she wasn't supposed to. The thing is.. it looked exactly like her moms. So of course, like any normal human being, she get obsessed with this case and her moms (which still isn't solved). There are a bunch of twists and turns in this book and I had no idea who actually did it!

The romance between her and Luke was spot on. I love me some "forbidden" romance. However, I still don't trust Luke. I don't care that he goes undercover or anything.. he just seemed super sketchy at times.

My money was on someone that she didn't think who did it.. nor was it the person who actually committed the murder that she wasn't supposed to see. HOWEVER, the cliffhanger that she might actually know the one person who murdered her mom was a complete and utter mind fuck. My mind is completely blown right now. I seriously need book 2 right now!

Overall, I'm in love with this book. I want to reread it right now! Recommending this to everyone!!

If the other adult books to come from Ms. Daugherty are like this one, then, I can't wait. Instantly, I connected with the characters as well as the storyline.

Harper McClain is a strong female lead. Plus, she is the type of woman I imagine when I picture a crime reporter...fearless, stubborn like a bulldog, quick thinker, and always gets her story. Although, she is lucky to have a great cohort in her cameraman, Miles. Miles has some good resources, willing to get into danger with Harper, and Harper and he make a great team.

Finally, I can't forget to mention mystery man and possible love interest, Luke Walker. There is a lot about Luke that was barely revealed. I can't wait to get to know more about Luke as well as I hope to see him more in future books. Harper and Luke's current relationship status is "it's complicated". Make sure that The Echo Killing is on your list to read for 2018. You don't want to miss this book!

This was in my My Thrill Club box and I finished it while at work today. Probably not something I would have picked our on my own but I'm not mad at the choice because it was a pretty good mystery read. I love book club boxes for this reason.
