Good book, I really enjoy Lehane's writing, but it failed to live up to "The Given Day" in my opinion. Perhaps it was the different setting (Tampa vs Boston) or that the story just didn't seem as plausible.

I'm not entirely sure I would have stuck with this if I were reading it, but I listened to it on my commute. For that it was interesting enough, though it did seem to lag on a lot at the end.

Different book than I usually read, but I was hooked right in. The characters seemed modern to me, I kept forgetting the book was set in Prohibition, but I really enjoyed the character development- the gangster with a heart, the love stories.

Wow. Was The Given Day and Live By Night written by the same author?

3.5 stars, similar to the previous book in the series, I found the historic time and environment more of a draw than the main characters or situation. The writing is good, but not as enjoyable as other Lehane novels. He clearly understands and can write about the criminal element and mix it with normal joes. I like that and I like the vibe his books generate. I am not in love with this series, and won't rush out to get the third installment in March, similar to not rushing to read this book.

Lehane as always is a good read. Gangsters, rum running and the timeline of the 20's. Good characters and the more you got to know Joe the more human he became. Bittersweet ending. I always enjoy reading whatever Dennis Lehane writes and you never know what to expect out of his novels. I like that he doesn't get stuck wlth the same continuous stories and genres. Looking for !ward to his next

Well written as always. Very broken characters. No happy endings.

Reading Lehane is a joy. He's among the best in combining historical, crime and personal drama in his works. His exploration of greed, power, love and death should be lessons for anyone else attempting a crime drama that breaks free of the constraints of mystery, police procedural and detective fiction. I've already begun the third in the Coughlin series, and happy that it was waiting.
