1.5 stars
absolutely awful book. the characters are all INSUFFERABLE, especially noah. i don't care that he's sixteen- i was certainly not acting like he was when i moved away at his same age. i have a lot of thoughts about this "book" (if it can even be called that, it's practically glorified wattpad slop)

the plot goes nowhere, and basically nothing even happens. sure, there's a relationship, then there's not, then there is, but really what else happens? i found myself being led from point a to point b while zig-zagging and turning around aimlessly, all while knowing where it was going to head. this couldve been 150 pages shorter and still accomplished what ends up happening.

i find that the entire premise of the blog is so unrealistic, especially as somebody that used tumblr. none of those users would care about or even see the troll blog realistically, let's be honest. the blog wasn't even really used AT ALL in the story, despite it being the name of the book- noah actively AVOIDS the blog at all costs.

also, i'll be the first to say it, noah is pretty racist in this. even if it's only micro-aggressions, it's still very weird to say some of the things he says to white people. also cis people, and women. noah is just so *mean* and unlikeable. i wish that we could have good trans representation for once in a YA novel. i also strongly dislike how noah is an unreliable narrator, but he definitely wasn't intended to be. he catches himself lying in his inner monologue multiple times, and it makes me wonder how many times he was lying in the book and it just wasn't said. like... be so for real. he also has a weird dislike for people with divorced parents (becca and drew) and brings it up as if it's a hinderance to them. as someone with divorced parents, ew!

speaking of hinderances, i absolutely hate how devin is infantilized because of devin's panic disorder/attacks. it's just in such poor taste. noah does not need to be devin's "savior" from the panic attacks. i'll also say, as a trans person that uses neopronouns, i STRONGLY dislike how devin switches pronouns multiple times. it makes the story clunky, and neos don't work well in stories unless done right, which it wasn't. devin just feels like the author's self insert.

i have a lot more issues, but that's the main gist. if i had a nickel for every time i saw a book with a cute cover boasting about trans male MC representation where the MC ends up being the brattiest and worst person in their own story, I'd have two nickels, which is weird that it's happened twice

I loved Meet Cute Diary so much! It was one of my most anticipated release of the year and it didn't disappoint. It didn't go in directions I expected and I also loved that, though I can't really say more :P

My favourite character was definitely Devin, and I loved that e decided to switch pronouns a few times through the book, and I especially enjoyed Noah's line that goes something like "Devin, they're your pronouns, you don't have to consider anyone else before you pick them."

Loved the trans/nonbinary/gender queer representation but could really do without the teen angst. Why do I keep reading YA?

Ugh, I really wanted to love this one. The issue was largely that I didn’t find the main character likeable at all. I found Noah selfish and whiney and wanted him to grow up.

Now, that being said he’s a 16 year old boy. I do give a pass for accuracy, but I really couldn’t stand the kid in this case.

I know fake dating is a trope but I found the whole “oh we fake dated and now we are dating for real” immediately weird.

Then, unanswered questions. Who was the troll of the meet cute blog or was that just not that relevant? I get trolls are anonymous but it was so targeted I hoped something would come of the plot line.

Why did Drew, up until that point a cis straight dude follow the blog? (I’m realizing he just wanted came out of the relationship but it still seemed a weird motive)

I didn’t like the portrayal of anxiety that much. I’m always happy to see panic disorder portrayed but one of the lines Noah says “maybe I’m helping Er feel better by just being around me” felt very naive.

I did like Devins character the most out of all of them but still felt bored. The neo pronouns were neat to see but even that fell flat.

This had the potential to be cute but I think it’s just too young a YA book for me. The whole book was based around a tumblr blog and that’s just a bit too young for my tastes.

I do think people will enjoy this book, I just couldn’t get past the main character being quite insufferable.

dnf :/ too insta lovey, not for me

Mid

Main character was intolerably spoiled and full of it.

Cute, cliché, and addictive
