Resta la sensazione di un'estate passata, una speranza vanificata, un'occasione persa per sempre. È parecchio triste, questo libro, parecchio americano. Le ultime storie mi sono piaciute di più delle prime, ma tant'è.

sad gritty stories set in west virginia with a bunch of down-on-their-luck-going-nowhere characters with just a dash of hope. i liked these twelve stories a whole lot.

This didn't feel like a collection of stories, but a wall plastered with windows - covered in coal, dust and skeletal flies.

This collection is viscerally transportative. I have no connection to the Southern US, but I feel as though I do now. You can practically feel the breeze rolling up your shirt sleeve, see the sun distort to brown between the hills, smell the grease and oil, taste the humidity on your tongue and hear both the industry and the silence.

The use of language really appeals to me. It is very singular, used from the perspective of the characters to put you in their minds. It offers a whistlestop tour of the existences and thought patterns of this area.

One of my favourite reads.

These stories are not perfect, but they are human. That's the key here. These aren't stories of sterile props constructed in front of an epiphany. These are stories of people and their problems in a specific time or place.
The prose is short and to the point, something most writing students can learn from, and even with their concision, these stories speak about the ways in which humans exist with their memories, with ambition and futility, isolation and alienation, and the hands life can deal.
Like many, I'm saddened that this is all we have from Breece Pancake. Some things remain a bit undeveloped. Still, he made his 26 years count.
