The second in the series, but only vague references to the previous book. Works stand alone.

Clara has had a tough go of things. Her mother is constantly critical, and then she causes a scandal by defending herself against the groping prince. But she takes her life into her own hands, and boards a carriage bound for somewhere in Scotland to be a housekeeper. While she loves the fantasy of books, she turns out to be very practical when it comes to solving problems in front of her.

Caelan is the brooding laird. As a widower, everyone interprets all his actions through the lens of grief. He is immediately interested in Clara, but she hears the endless stories about his grief and believes she will always be second.

Much of this emotional conflict is a classic miscommunication trope. It’s not the most interesting, but they marry halfway through and have lots of passionate scenes that carry the story through the second half until Caelan finally opens up about his true feelings.

A little zany, but in such a good way. Everyone insists he’s devastated from losing his first, but he’s desperately obsessed with his faux housekeeper

I liked this ! I didn’t love it as much as the first book (the whole Isla thing went on wayyy too long) and it was definitely more insta love but still very fun and cute.

I adored this book! It was just so damn fun to read. I had a smile on my face the whole time! Clara and Caelan are just the cutest couple! I love how they compliment each other and how they fall in love.

Clara was so quirky and fun. I really enjoyed her a lot.

That Caelen is a dirty talker and and I was here for it, as well as for him in his kilt...ahh I love me a Scotsman!

I have to say though I thought that Alfie and Whilemena stole the show. I hope he shows up in more books because that little guy is so adorable.

The narrator was fantastic doing both an English and Scottish accent, easily moving between the two and I was thoroughly engaged with this audio.

Thank you to #netgalley and #elosiajames for the awesome opportunity to read this book and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Thanks to Avon and Netgalley for this advance copy.

Eloisa James was my gateway to romance and I love her books so much.  Her recent ones have been a bit hit or miss for me, and I'll admit that I struggle to think through how her series are connected within each other, but taking Hardly a Gentleman as a standalone, this book was a lot of fun.  Clara is a hoot.  Manhandled by the Prince of England, she escapes to the Highlands to maybe be a housekeeper, and why not?  Caelan is supposedly heartbroken over the loss of his first wife, but all of a sudden Clara is far more interesting than his grief.

These two are fun and Clara in particular is a hoot.  There is a some misunderstanding about grief but Clara keeps things moving and has hilarious ideas about housekeeping that everyone is just putting up with because she's such a nice person and so clearly NOT a housekeeper.

This was a great comfort read and kinda what I needed in the moment.  Eloisa James forever.
