I tried to read this book all the way through, but it did not work out for me. The writing was stunning... but I was not into the story or able to stick to it.

Phew, brace yourself for a tough ending.

need to put this down...too dull for words

I finished this last night and thought, "Let me sleep on it and see how I feel about it in the morning." Well, it is now morning, and I'm feeling about the same way. I didn't actively dislike this book, but I also didn't really like or care about it. There weren't really any redeeming characters for me.

This was not great. The writing fell short; the plot and characters lacked cohesion. And the pace? So slow.

poignant would truly be the best possible way to describe the inheritance of loss. every character every plotline is dripping with relevance. by focusing on the lives of the characters, it details how the insurgency period affected members of different social strata and the inhumanity of it all. seeing
biju reunite with his father at the end was simultaneously Beautiful and heartbreaking as it was the only bit of hope left. i loved their relationship so much. there was a line where biju says that they were no longer relevant in each other's lives except for the hope that they would be and that was just. oof.
i love the experimental details kiran desai includes in her work. by making the font bigger, smushing words together, her use of onamatopoeia, they all contribute to creating a really immersive experience. just so good. fortunate to have met her and got a signed copy <3

DNF - I got to page 100 and literally nothing had happened. The language is just overly flowery and needlessly detailed and really life is too short.

Couldn't finish this. Got about halfway and had no desire to pick it up anymore. Maybe I'm just impatient lately.

There was a lot of hype for this book, so I was disappointed when I read it. I did not enjoy the writing (I thought it was too ornery), and the story was moving slow.
