I simply cannot finish this book. It has failed to grab my attention 1/3 of the way through. I am giving up, there are too many other books I want to read!

Meh.

A hard, bitter, fractured novel that has almost no love for its characters, only caustic critiques. Everyone tries to get ahead, but resents even a modicum of perceived success in anybody else.

In the microcosm of Kalimpong, Desai has picked an ideal representative for the cultural, economic, ethnic, religious shattering of India after independence. This is somewhat awkwardly juxtaposed with a narrative about Indian immigration, which, while providing a worthwhile vivisection of the Indian diaspora, feels shoehorned into the plot.

if I had been reading this instead of listening to it, i would have quit a long time ago

The book was beautiful to read. The lyrical and descriptive prose made it thoroughly enjoyable and the description of the experiences of immigrants was informative.
