I know this is supposed to be wonderful... but I am having trouble getting to the end of it

I know this is incredibly first world of me, but this lost me with the dog abduction.

I could only get a third of the way into this book. Beautiful writing, fabulous intricate descriptions but no emotional link for me. Does that mean I'm a lazy reader? Maybe I am, but I can't connect with a book unless I can connect with the characters. Couldn't do that here.

first read 2011

re-read 2013

if I have to read another of these post-colonial, transgenerational global identity books, I will go crazy.
It's good, no noubt.
But not original.
It's another ... God of Small Things, or Joy Luck Club, or some rewritten version of the woes of colonial pasts, and globalized presents for 'natives'.

The writing is good with some lovely imagery. But the plot and the characters (except for the cook's son) failed to grab me.

I think this story had too many time jumps for me to really enjoy it and understand all the characters to their full depth. I feel like if it had been a collection of short stories that all met up or connected in the end, it would have been more powerful; because right now I am just confused on the majority of those connections.

Makes you ache for the beautifully drawn characters, but without driving them forward much.
