This was quite unreadable. Reached the half mark and started skipping whole sections because it was just descriptions of bad environment (unhealthy and dirty) and a character just sitting doing nothing. There is no way any kind of beautiful writing would redemption this unfortunate collection of words with no plot, many identical
characters and dialogue that leads no where

I thought it got off to a pretty slow start and the first half had a few too many heavy-handed metaphors, but the last 150 pages or so were breathtaking. Also it's a region and a period of time I know next to nothing about and it left me wanting to do my research.

dragged on far too long. killed my desire to read for 4 months straight.
I really enjoyed this, but felt it bogged down towards the end. India fascinates me, but the class issues are so confusing to those of us not familiar with it! Still highly recommend it.
The author skillfully plays with words, turning even the most banal events into moments of profound consternation. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot development, set in a politically volatile town in the backdrop of the "stable, mighty" Kanchenjunga, with characters sharing their internal struggles and guilty pleasures. There are many quotable moments in the book, some that demands to be reread and remembered, and others make you put down the book to frantically search for a pen! I would definitely say this a must-read.
Kiran Desai's writing is poetry; no single sentence is wasted. This narrative is charged with emotion, history, humor, and intelligence. I shall be revisiting these characters again!
this book really took off for me in the latter half. The story of 4 characters of different generations and how they loved and survived amid a backdrop of riots, beatings, massacres, revolutions, poverty and privilege. Takes place in India and NY. Was so invested by the end that I could not put it down. Ahhhh, Mutt...
I didn’t have the time to put the level of focus into the book I needed to understand it. I’ll come back to it.
