The Susan Ryeland series is great fun - two books in one, it pairs modern amateur sleuthing with 1950s crime. Brilliantly written but also poking gentle fun at the whole crime fiction genre. Fabulous.
I really liked Horowitz's The Magpie Murders, and this is its sequel, although it has elements of a prequel, as the main Alan Conway book in this one is # 4 (or thereabouts), while The Magpie Murders is the title of both Horowitz's book and Conway's (the fictional author's) last one. Horowitz, the creator of BBC's Midsomer Murders and Foyle's War, enjoys playing games with his readers (like his fictional author Conway), and this book contains an entire book by Conway in the middle of the ongoing story. It's about 250 pages long, and you read it, start to finish, with the main character, Susan Ryeland. I really enjoyed this one, too (and I love Midsomer Murders, t00).
