Um, I like it but I wish I loved it. The premise of it was interesting, and thinking about all the slaves trying to find their families was heartbreaking. But for some reason I just had a hard time getting into it. I did like that there was no profanity or graphic-ness to the things that happen. And I appreciate the story of wanting to know where you came from and the connection to ancestors.

I did like this quote on pg 253 "We encourage vigorous debate. Civil debate is a healthy and democratic process. If one cannot make ones point without yelling, name-calling, or insulting others, one should develop a stronger argument before speaking further."

Excellent on audio!

I have learned for myself the wholesome effect of embracing one's family history, so I felt a kinship with this story on many levels.

At times, it was over-long and some of the conflicts seemed tired and unnecessary. Overall, I found it a worthy read.

Tentative DNF. Just couldn’t get into it right now but think I would really enjoy it at another time.

I really loved the concept of this book, but it was slow to start and then rushed at the end. The history is so intriguing, just something fell flat.

I really enjoyed this book. Hannie's faith and hope of finding her family and the heartbreaking ease with which she tells her story played on my heart strings. Even as a free person she was loyal to Lavinia and Juneau, bound by their shared experiences.

Benny's resilience and love for her students was admirable. She was unwavering in her goal to teach them and make things better for them.

The author did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life and I enjoyed listening to this in audiobook format because the readers did a beautiful job keeping the characters apart. They felt real and I cared about all of them.

Also loved the excerpts of the the Lost Friends column at the start of each chapter!
