This is the second Lisa Wingate book I've read; I think she is might be a new favored author.
The book had so much potential! I felt like the editors slashed so much. I would have loved to see it through for another 300 pages to continue building the characters and their stories.

*Disclaimer: I won a hardback copy of this novel through Goodreads.
Wow. I will definitely need to reread this one. A first year teacher and a former slave whose stories are intertwined more than they know. In 1875, Hannie Gossett ends up on a journey from Louisiana to Texas in search of her former master with her former master's two children. In 1987, Benny Silva moves to Louisiana to begin her first year of teaching. In search of books for her students, Ms. Silva happens upon the house of an old judge - a Gossett's house. In the house she finds a book listing the former slaves from the planation. Hannie is one of them. With a little friendship and a little romance, these characters develop into their own throughout this novel.
As I was reading, I found myself having to go back and reread parts of Hannie's stories. I feel like I missed so much and needed to slow down. Moses's introduction to Hannie did not stick with me, although it should have. Benny had a secret, one that wasn't revealed until the epilogue. When she hinted at it, I got annoyed because it felt like something the author put in for no reason. I thought Benny was being dramatic. It all made sense at the end though. Even though at times I thought both of these things would make me rate the book lower, I just couldn't put it down. Everything that was there made up for everything that wasn't.
