Didn’t take long to get invested in Hannie & Benny as characters and their stories. Both on adventures of their time, over 100 years apart. Being familiar with several of the settings as they travel didn’t hurt. Couldn’t help but cheer for both of them.

This is another example of a book where it unnecessarily goes back and forth from present to past to weave two stories together when only the past story is needed and is so so good.

Lovely note by author - she addresses where her influence came from.
The thing she didn't address is the Carnegie Library ....
I liked this book, I liked the characters, I was invested in the story but this book cannot hold a candle to “Before We Were Yours” and I’m not convinced that this is the author’s fault. Like BWWY this book flip flops from past to present (present being 1987) sometimes leaving the chapters with a cliffhanger and yes cliffhangers are great but what isn’t great is when we pick up the story again and the resolution of said cliffhanger is just BLAH. My version of the book was an iBook and came in at 339 pages when I feel it should have been at least 370, maybe then I wouldn’t feel so cheated out of some of the story. As I said I don’t think this is the author’s fault but maybe more down to the editor and publishers wanted the book below 400.
So to sum it up good story that I think could’ve been great.

This book was spectacular. It follows 2 storylines spanning 2 different centuries and many generations. The stories from the ads were so moving and heart-wrenching. Lisa Wingate is such a crafted storyteller that I was so caught up in each storyline that I’d be equal parts sad and happy to go back to the other one at the end of each chapter. Each time I couldn’t wait to see what had happened to the other character. But I also wanted more time with the current one. She did such a great job spanning the generational gap.
A beautifully written story that weaves historical fact and fiction into the best book I have read this year. Part of the book is set in 1987 and alternates with the era just after the War Between the States/ Civil War. Be prepared with tissues-- but know it has a satisfying ending. The racial injustices are a touchy subject, but Ms Wingate handled it well.
