Important history
This book started off a bit slow and clunky to me, but then I got caught up in the history and the people. The Lost Friends is a powerful testimony of our painful history, and also the great lengths people will go to for connection. This matters.

It’s slower paced but I didn’t mind. It was a really nice read. Uplifting. I listened to it and the audio was really well done.

I loved the topic and the characters. However, there were so many characters and plots that I had trouble following what was happening sometimes.

This book was definitely a page turner, with so many cliffhangers I could barely put it down. I really enjoyed the way the author wove the two stories together. And I enjoyed reading about the real “Lost Friends” column in the afterword.

Slow to start, fascinating for the rest of the story...minus the little plot twist at the very very end that had me scratching my head. Still worth the read, in my opinion.
The premise of this book is really interesting, in one storyline an emancipated slave searching for family and the second storyline about a modern day class learning history. However I found myself often confused and jolted between the 2 worlds, forgetting characters and plot points. I also felt like the end wrapped up very quickly and that felt dissatisfying.
2.5 stars rounded down. I was disappointed with this book as the idea of a story based on the history of the Book of Lost Friends was so intriguing. The lost friends column was created by a southern black newspaper to help Black people looking for kin they had been separated from before during and immediately after the civil war. I am clearly an outlier here but amongst other smaller complaints (the plot twist literally on the last couple pages?!
