4.0 AVERAGE

Well written, fanatasic characters and powerful message around how we tell history and whose history we hear. 4.5

“A single ladybug lands feather light on the teacher’s finger.”

Loved the story but felt it was a bit glazed over at times.

Audiobook

I listened on audio, so sometimes it was hard for me to keep up with the change between two stories being unfolded along side each other, but I did enjoy the two stories and how they connected at the end. I always love when historical fiction includes author’s notes and this one did not disappoint.

This book was just ok for me. I loved Before We Were Yours and was very much looking forward to this new historical fiction from Lisa Windgate, but much of the book fell flat for me. The idea for the book is brilliant and I really liked the real lost friends advertisements placed in the book. I struggled to get into the book and didn’t feel like it picked up pace until almost halfway though. The ending felt rushed.

“To the Lost Friends, wherever you might be. May your names never go unspoken and your stories forever be told.”

One of the best books I’ve read in quite some time. I loved how the story came full circle and how each characters’ story was so interconnected. I am speechless for the right words to describe how I felt at the end of reading this book. My heart is equally crushed because this is a true depiction of slavery in America, but also so full because of the triumphs the characters experienced. 5/5 stars.

I want to like this book more then I do. I think it is the dual story line that bothers me....I like both stories and I understand why the book is written this way, but I think I would have preferred the two stories to be stand alone books. And the final reveal in the present day story just felt unnecessary or that she is setting up for a sequel

I loved how invested I was in the characters of both timelines by the end of the story. Great book.
