Ich stecke mal wieder in einer üblen Leseflaute und muss dieses Buch einfach abbrechen. Ich bin kein Fan von langsamen Erzähltempos und hier war die Erzählweise nicht nur langsam, sondern richtiggehend langatmig.
Die Handlung wird auf zwei Zeitebenen erzählt: Ein Erzählstrang spielt Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts und begleitet eine ehemalige Sklavin auf einer Reise durch die USA und der andere spielt Ende des 21. Jahrhunderts und verfolgt eine Lehrerin, die eine neue Stelle an einer Schule beginnt.
Und das war's. Nach knapp der Hälfte des Buches ist nicht mehr passiert, als diese Ausgangslage beschreibt. Die Handlung ist unglaublich zäh und es hat sich so angefühlt, als würde sie auf der Stelle treten. Obwohl die ehemalige Sklavin noch mehr erlebt, als die Lehrerin, konnte ich keinen Zugang zu ihrer Handlung und den Charakteren finden. Das Buch ist sehr spannungsarm und die Autorin hat es weder geschafft, mein Interesse für die Charaktere zu wecken, noch irgendeine Form von Emotionen zu erzeugen.
Die Lehrerin hängt ständig in einer Bibliothek in ihrer Stadt herum, deren Besitzer zuuuuufälligerweise den gleichen Nachnamen trägt, wie die Sklavin aus dem anderen Handlungsstrang – was die ganze Story unglaublich vorhersehbar macht. Abgesehen davon wusste ich selbst nach der Hälfte noch nicht, wohin die Autorin mit der Geschichte hin will, ausser dass wir sehr wahrscheinlich am Ende den "Plot Twist" erhalten, dass der Besitzer der Bibliothek ein Nachfahre der Sklavin ist...
Das Buch ist viel zu langgezogen und es fehlt an einem spannenden Plot. Ich habe mich schon relativ früh zum Weiterlesen zwingen müssen und irgendwann nur noch ganze Abschnitte überflogen, bis ich schliesslich ganz das Handtuch werfen musste.
Kann ich leider nicht empfehlen.

I was really intrigued by the topic to be explored, unfortunately, the author's choice to navigate it via two parallel timelines wasn't the best
Personally, I couldn't quite connect with either of the narrators and bits of the story were mentioned but not expanded on, creating a feeling of incompletion and harsh divide between both povs specially as the ending neared

This book toggles back and forth in time between Hannie in Louisiana, 1875 and Benny Silva in Louisiana, 1987. This historical novel had a lot of promise, but it was all over the place. It took a while to get invested in the characters and the switching back and forth every chapter didn’t work for me this time. Just as one character’s story started to pick up, it was time to go back to the other character. While the foreshadowing was there for what the connection would be between the past and present, not enough time was spent exploring it. There was no real payoff. And then the big secret of Benny’s thrown in at the end? Either introduce it earlier and make it part of the story or don’t bother. I wanted this book to be better, but it was disappointing.
