Wonderful narrative. Story doesn't focus on one particular character or story, but a collective of shared/common experiences as mail-order brides from Japan. The narrative is broken into 6-8 chapters- starting with the boat ride over, meeting husbands, having children, to the Japanese internment during WWII. Moving life stories. I liked the repetitive element. I was deeply moved by the shared experience; each experience was unique and different but the same. I can see why this book was nominated for the National Book Award. It gets my vote.

The plural first person perspective was really interesting, it did a good job portraying the complicated and diverse views within one group. It also made it very fast-paced, it’s easy to pick up and read the whole thing in one sitting.
