I won’t be rating this one because I wasn’t aware that this was a prequel to a series I’ve never read and so it’s really my own fault that this book wasn’t really enjoyable. It’s a quick read with rapid pacing and a good helping of the old fashioned YA pining.

My Rating: 5 stars

I zoomed through this novella and was desperate for more when it ended. This story is beautiful, romantic and is truly a great introduction and origin story to the Remnant Chronicles. It will leave you wanting more!

*Slight spoilers ahead!*

My Thoughts:

This was an absolutely wonderful novella and I could easily have read a full length novel about the characters of Jafir and Morrighan.

If you have read the entirety of the Remnant Chronicles, you will be aware of the history of Morrighan and how Jafir de Aldrid loved her, despite all the difficulties between the kingdoms and confusion regarding whether she was stolen, taken or ran away. This book looks at the history of Morrighan and how she was one of the Remnant, in their post-apocalyptic world. This book really showed you insight into what had come before the war with Godrel telling stories, the same Godrel who despairs about losing Morrighan throughout the Remnant Chronicles. The historical background you get with this book is wonderful and really adds to the setting of the series.

Seeing the survivors and scavengers living in the same world but with hatred and fear was really interesting and I thought it sounded truly awful how the survivors, the Remnant, had to keep moving, despite thirsting for knowledge, honour and survival, particularly with the Scavengers fighting for their resources every step of the way.

Our two main characters, Jafir and Morrighan meet as children, meet as teenagers and then meet again as adults. Their chemistry on page (or audio as I listened to it) is wonderful. It happens quickly but not ridiculously. I could read pages and pages of their relationship. It’s a Romeo and Juliet-esque story but a love that isn’t overly angsty. We see them fight their divide and also get an insight into how Morrighan, the kingdom, came to be, although it is heartbreaking too. The characters on page are different and complex, much more complex than you’d expect for a novella of 92 pages.

My only issue with this novella is that it is too short! If Mary E Pearson ever writes anything more about these two I would most definitely read it. I loved seeing the background to the world before Lia, Rafe and Kaden and I also loved seeing the dream of Hope that may come, hope that would one day have a name.

The writing is gorgeous, the audible narration is wonderful and it truly leaves you wanting more. I cannot share my love for this series enough.

Recommended for: Lovers of the Remnant Chronicles and any fantasy lovers would enjoy this book! I’d recommend reading it after the series, just because I think it works better but it is up to you!

Quotes (Spoiler Free):

“Our stories must be passed to our sons and daughters, for with but one generation, history and truth are lost forever.”

“From the loins of Morrighan, Hope will be born. On its heels came a whispered name that was always just beyond my reach, not yet mine to hear, but I knew that one day my children’s children or the ones who came after would hear it. One day hope would have a name.”

“We talked about it. Love. Was that what this was? I love you, Jafir, she would say at any moment of the day, just to hear it said aloud. She would laugh and then say it again, her eyes solemn, looking into mine. I love you, Jafir de Aldrid. And it didn’t matter how many times she said it, I waited for her to say it again.”

“But all I heard was a different kind of knowing, one that even Morrighan couldn’t hear, a knowing that felt as sure and old as the earth itself. It whispered deep within my gut, I am yours, Morrighan, forever yours … and when the last star of the universe blinks silent, I will still be yours.”

Mood: 😯😏🥰😳☺️

A desolation has swept the world, forcing the people to flee to the far reaches of the earth and start over. Some people have become foragers, tribesmen that peacefully move from place to place to find food, following the inner sense of the “Knowing”. Then there are the clansmen, raiders and scavengers who hunt and raid tribesmen, stealing their food and sometimes their women. But when child raider Jarif doesn’t turn in child tribesman Morrighan in to his father, a strange friendship begins to form. As the years pass, Morrighan and Jarif grow closer and closer, but as Jarif’s clan makes plans to cross the mountains, Morrighan and Jarif have to come to terms that their love isn’t meant to be.

This was my first forray into the world of the Remnant, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Mine is the illustrated edition, and I really liked seeing the black and white pictures accompanying the story, and the beautiful and elegant border frame. The story itself was simple, Jase and Morrighan’s story progressing quickly from their first meeting to their second, then to their third when they truly began to fall in love. I liked how grumpy and antagonistic Jase was at first, and how Morrighan constantly responded with “chill out” vibes. Him trying to sneak up on her and her tracking him was especially amusing. I wish there had been more time in the latter end of the story with the journey across the mountains, with the clan and Morrighan really bonding. I did like the ending, and I thought it held a lot of hope and beauty.
