A good first book in the Septimus Heap series. I got a little confused at times, figuring out who was who. Once I got it sorted, the story took off and we were on an adventure. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This is an enjoyable read - I have seen the reviews about the lack of originality, which I totally disagree - everything that is written takes its ideas from what has existed before, but it is the presentation that makes the difference - there needs to be enough of what has gone before to have the comfort of familiar but enough new to wonder and want to know what happens next - this does that beautifully and I will continue the series - my only complaint is the final chapter with the were are they now - it is unique in that minor characters are given a few paragraphs of, Oh Yeah by the Way, but I skipped it - the wonder is part of the fun to me - over all, this is a great read

As an adult reading this it was predictable, a bit slow at times, and was very simple. Its not always a bad thing depending on what I'm in the mood to read. It did have a bit of fun and some interesting points. It did have a nice world build/magic system and set up for a series.

The child in me that loved reading things like Chronicles or Narnia and Alice in wonderland. That child would've loved this book and the start of this series. A magical adventure with some twists and turns. Quirky characters and creatures. Some of the slower parts I found as an adult, I think as a child I would not felt the slowness, I would have followed the adventure of it.

Although full of very entertaining and interesting characters and happenings, I had a hard time getting hooked on this tale. But once hooked it was a fun ride. Peopled with creatures that reminded me of an amalgamation of the beasts of Piers Anthony and Terry Pratchett it has the same childhood charm as the Harry Potter books.

This is, hands down, one of the best wizard series ever written

I enjoyed this very much. Sage managed to combine the child-like perspective without condescending to child-like writing. Very refreshing. The plotline itself is a bit tired albeit set in a unique world with its own unique myth. I'm anxious to discover what happens next.

A really great book about magyk, friendship and family!
I think, the plotttwist with Boy 142 aka Septimus was really well written and I suspected nothing. I am excited to read the next one
