At first i put this on pause because it starts off pretty dry. Will and Holt are in Tuscany learning battle strategies. And Horace is off visiting Nihon-ja. It’s a little slow, at least for me, as i am most definitely NOT the target audience.
However, I’ve been meaning to continue this series, and i do enjoy it, so i pushed through, expecting the worst.
It is not slow or dry once we get past the initial couple of chapters the story starts moving along.
I do love these characters, and it is nice to hang with them again. There is a definite way these books/stories are told that give it a distinct flavor.
The ponies are missing from this story, which is a bummer, but there are many interesting things happening anyway.
The only thing i don’t really like about these later books is the addition of romantic relationships with Will and Horace. It’s a very, very minor subplot, it just bugs me for some reason. It is totally understandable at the age they are now.
Glad i finally sunk back into this series. It really is great.

The portrayal of the relationship between Evanlyn and Alyss doesn’t hold water, for 12 year old maybe, but given their social positions and age this was problematic throughout the entire book.
I love how John Flanagan continuously explores different international cultures through the adventures of Halt, Will, Horace and this time Evanlyn and Alyss.
It's an amazing way to teach young kids about the world without making them feel like they're in a cultural lesson.
These are incredible books and I enjoy reading each and every one of them.

I was a long time reading this. I started reading with my eldest son, but finally gave up and finished it on my own.
I enjoyed it immensely. It was nice to have the character of the Emperor, be one of a good ruler who cared more about his people than political power. I also enjoyed the fact that commoners are able to defeat elite fighters, cooperation overcomes political prowess. 8/23/12
Re-read with my youngest. Andy enjoyed this and wanted to start the next right away.

Finally passed the bechdel test again!
I love the nostalgia and middle grade plots, but I could do without the petty women fighting over a boy. It’s getting old, but the characters are still so good for middle grade

Oh man, I loved this one! It was fun to see how the series ends and to watch the characters grow up!
The ending was a little anti-climactic but I still liked the book ❤️
A 4. Could've been a five but the girl drama was just really out of place. Some of it worked and other parts just didn't.
I can't get over the fact that the extremely intelligent Alyss who was making fun of Horace for Evanlyn's long hug would be shocked by her admitting feelings for the man. Or the fact that Evanlyn pretends Alyss is the only one who has ever been jealous when he have read Evanlyn's jealous thoughts of the girl in various books. And in this book she physically pulls Alyss and Horace away while hugging and Alyss simply thinks about doing that to her and Will. The girl drama just simply wasn't well handled.
But otherwise this book is beautiful. The adventure, the action, and the ability to discover a new land in this world was delightful. The Nihon-Ja (Japanese) culture in this book was absolutley stunning to read about and a new experience for me in terms of adventure fiction.
I did DNF this book in 2013 for two reasons. One being the girl drama. Two was my personal life and not being in the right mind space to read.
Anyway this book was great. The nicknames were adorable. My ships sailed. And I'm quite happy.
