The hardest to get through out of a mostly enjoyable series, I think because there wasn’t really any personal stakes involved.
The threat was mostly seen as only relevant to Nihon-ja, not Araluen and not even, at the very least, Will, Halt or Horace. Besides a feeling of kindness, I guess, for Horace. But nothing pressing or long lasting for this context.

The continued jealousy between the girls was also kind of confusing?
Alyss was jealous of Evanlyn wanting Will when Alyss knew Horace wanted Evanlyn and even teased him for it? I don’t really get why she was so jealous.

Overall, the writing definitely became better and better over the course of the series. I like how smart and sensible the characters are, their banter (especially their banter), and Halt. It was a fun ride, very funny.

I LOVE ❤️ THIS BOOK! Of course, I didn't understand half of the battle tactics but it was still great!!! There is such a HUGE SURPRISE AT THE END I WAS SO HAPPY ABOUT IT! I love the story! There are such incredible characters and they were sooo deep. I am sad though because I am almost finished with the series!

I really wasn't into this one :/ such a bummer since I've really liked most of the books in this series.

Maybe I’m just biased because a love this serie but I really liked this book (even if it took me a long time to read it)!
I love the setting, it was so unique from the other books and we got to see many of the characters we know and love! The plot was interesting, I love the country, Nihon-ja, and all of the new characters from Nihon-ja.❤️
I just want to give a shout out to Alyss! I love her and she’s so underrated.

If I were to give 1 book of the Rangers apprentice series 5 stars, it’s this one. This is just simply a work of art, how Flanagan describes Will racing north to raise the army and defend the fort almost Troy-style. I found the girls going to the far north to recruit the soldiers a bit less interesting which makes it a 4.75 for me

While finishing this book late into the night, I could help but think how far these characters have come from the first book. Bullies turned into loyal heroes. Dreamers turned into doers. I believe the author did a fantastic job of making these characters so real to readers.

While this book isn't my favorite in the series, I really enjoyed it and If I remember right, there was NO language in this one! :) Even though this is my second time reading the books, I still got creeped out during Alyss and Evanlyn's hair raising adventure.
