This book looks at the year 1776 in American (and George Washington's) history, starting just before the start of said year, and finishing just after it ends. It looks at Washington's initial success, his subsequent failures, and his final successes, succesess that turned the tide in the American war of Independence.

It's actually a decent enough read. It cover's Washington's 1776 thoroughly, examining what happened in the battles, and the internecine struggles on both sides well. It's just I've read a number of books about Washington or the War of Independence (Chernow's Washington, Joseph J Ellis' His Excellency, McCullough's Adams, Meacham's book about Jefferson, to name but a few), and I'm wondering if I'm getting a little fatigued about the subject.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good book, and reads well, but be warned you'll get a lot of detail about a subject you might have read before.

Very well written book! Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a quick overview of just how lucky we are to have the country we live in today. 🇺🇸

1776 was a fun introduction to the Revolutionary War era. It wasn't overly complex and wasn't very technical. It made a good audiobook. The style was very engaging, but the most interesting part of the book was the portrayal of George Washington. McCullough gave what seemed to be a very honest portrayal of Washington unburdened by legend, although I must admit I don't have much with which to compare this book's portrayal. McCullough showed Washington in his few week moments and showed his mistakes, which while slightly deflating my opinion of Washington as a tactician, his portrayal of Washington's perseverance through incredible adversity greatly inflated my opinion of Washington as a leader.

I am so glad that the book club throws in non-fiction, otherwise I would have never read this book. I realized how little we learned as kids about the revolutionary war. Wow, talk about underdogs. Glad we were able to pull it all off against the king's men. I would hate to think that I would be required to buy a hat for Will and Kate's nuptials.
