Deenie is a seventh grader who judges people's imperfections until she gets one. Then and only then does she have a bit of empathy. I appreciate her relationship with her older sister. Helen was a great older sister.

I read this book when I was 11 and it was one of favorites! I just read it with my daughters and they loved it as well. It was interesting re-reading this from a mother's point of view.

I decided to read Deenie because it was on the “banned book list” on the library app. I’m always curious why they ban books.
The funny thing is this is how kids minds work and they do think about their “special place” i get parents want to keep their kids innocent but it doesn’t mean they don’t relate to the subject matter. But it’s a different time they say and people are more “woke” so they also complain about the way she views people the prejudices she is working though from her own mind. She is not telling people to be prejudice she is asking herself why she was prejudice. There is a lot to unpack from such a short little book. Would it bother me if my 7th grader read this book? No it would not. I’d prefer
My kids could talk to me about stuff like this and not feel bad just because they have their own minds full of stuff to work through.

"If I was going to be ugly I was going to be ugly all the way...as ugly as anybody'd ever been before. ...Maybe even uglier."

I think I liked this book, however I wish my younger self would have read it to really sus out my feelings about this book. My current self feels like the ending was rushed, that the sexual parts was incorporated for shock value, and that there was no true ending. Overall I found it interesting and it kept my attention but I didn't feel like I got the whole picture just a snippet into a few weeks of Deenie's life without a real conclusion...

This was probably the one Judy Blume novel that I had most wanted to read but never did because of the content warnings. I was diagnosed with scoliosis in sixth grade and had to wear a back brace (though a different type than the one Deenie has to wear). This was one of, if not, the only books featuring a main character dealing with the same diagnosis as I had been given at age 11. I suspect the more mature content would have gone over my head or I would have been embarrassed reading those parts (and maybe would have stopped reading to avoid reading similar passages).

I have to say that this book really did take me back in time and remember what it was like to get the initial diagnosis at school, visit specialists, and get fitted for (and then wearing) the back brace. Like Deenie, I was also told I might need surgery if my curvature worsened. All of the feelings and emotions she experienced and expressed seemed authentic and reminiscent of my own.

I selected this as my pick for the 2023 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge prompt "a book published the year you were born."
