Another book that made admire him more, Shel Silverstein, he is such a creative person, he writes a fictional story with a lot of lessons to teach us.
I have really enjoyed this book, not to mention the humor that he added nicely in there.. :)

ZEBRA QUESTION

"I asked the zebra,
Are you black with white stripes?
Or white with black stripes?
And the zebra asked me,
Are you good with bad habits?
Or are you bad with good habits?
Are you noisy with quiet times?
Or are you quiet with noisy times?
Are you happy with some sad days?
Or are you sad with some happy days?
Are you neat with some sloppy ways?
Or are you sloppy with some neat ways?
And on and on and on and on
And on and on he went.
I'll never ask a zebra
About stripes
Again."

Silvestein's poems are so whimsical, jolly and imaginative. Here's my favorite poem from this book.

Last night, while I lay thinking here,
some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
and pranced and partied all night long
and sang their same old Whatif song:

Whatif I'm dumb in school?
Whatif they've closed the swimming pool?
Whatif I get beat up?
Whatif there's poison in my cup?
Whatif I start to cry?
Whatif I get sick and die?
Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?
Whatif I don't grow taller?
Whatif my head starts getting smaller?
Whatif the fish won't bite?
Whatif the wind tears up my kite?
Whatif they start a war?
Whatif my parents get divorced?
Whatif the bus is late?
Whatif my teeth don't grow in straight?
Whatif I tear my pants?
Whatif I never learn to dance?

Everything seems well, and then
the nighttime Whatifs strike again!

How much good inside a day? Depends how good you live ’em. How much love inside a friend? Depends how much you give ’em.

This book of poems and drawings was first published in 1981. I was long out of childhood when he was first popular, and never read any of Silverstein’s works before. This just didn’t do it for me. The rhymes were not so clever or rhythmic as Dr Seuss. There were a few I did really enjoy – “Have Fun” (there may not be a shark in the park, but what’s that creature just under the water?), “Dinner Guest” (I wouldn’t be home, either!), and “Overdues” (What to do when your library book is REALLY overdue!). I imagine children would find them entertaining, and the drawings are quite inventive.
