i love to read anything my reaffirms my frankly luddite views on AI, but this book felt very half-baked. also may’s surgery, the supposed premise, is barely discussed beyond the first couple chapters and seemingly makes little impact at all

Hum depicts an incredibly fascinating future society that doesn’t have to extrapolate much from the technology we already have. This is a novel that shows how technology and artificial intelligence can have large implications, but in a quieter way than an all out dystopian novel.
Essentially, this is the portrait of a family and the typical frustrations marriages and kids can face with the added on obstacles of a society where it seems 1) very hard to thrive economically and 2) everything is run by AI “hums”. When our protagonist, May, needs money, she undergoes facial surgery as part of a clinical trial to make her face unrecognizable to cameras. With this money she decides to treat her family to a trip to the renown and elusive Botanical Gardens. Only, things don’t go as planned and May finds the world doubting her skills as a mother and society and technology turned against her.
I really, really like Phillips’ writing. It’s very atmospherically terrifying and adds so much to each book. This is very close to five stars to me I just didn’t love the ending! All in all I would recommend to literary sci-fi lovers and fans of Phillips’ other works.

read this during a heat wave while also experiencing a corporate layoff….TOO REAL.
How refreshing to have a middle aged mom as a main character. I will say I had an awful lot of anxiety while reading, (listening.) But, I think that’s because it was well written, and I related to May’s thoughts and worries wholeheartedly. I’m going to be thinking about this one for a while.
