the ending fell flat for me :( otherwise I enjoyed it - scary to think we’re not too far away from that world…

This book is haunting, and will likely stick with me for a very long time.

Simple yet beautiful storytelling. This was seriously such a breath of fresh air, highlighting the small and beautiful moments of life and family in a world that feels hopeless. The themes of motherhood were striking to me, even though I am not a mother myself.

The genre of futuristic speculative fiction is so saturated, but this short novel distinguished itself from the rest in my opinion. I am interested to try some of Helen Phillips’ other books!

At first I thought it was painfully obvious, an unimaginative dystopia, then I realized I only found it boring bc it was basically just reflecting current reality. At times a slog, but I’m glad I stuck it out for the last act. Those kids are brats btw

I cannot stop thinking about this book, so it must have been good to leave such an impact. While reading I felt like I was playing catch up, but I think that was the author’s intention. It didn’t take too long to figure out what things were “woom, bunnies, etc.). It was such an interesting book, placed in the not so distant future. I did think the ending fell flat. Maybe the title and description of the book were a little misleading too? It’s definitely worth reading.
