Such a good book on meta cognition, it’s a lot of “pseudoscience” but at the same time the concepts can be felt, it’s pseudoscience because it’s not falsifiable but it’s useful.
Seeing events as being stuck or passing being, swing the voice in your head as an external crazy maniac, accepting and letting go
Definitely helped me at least today

I couldn't put this book down. And it couldn't have come to me at a better time & I will often refer back to it for guidance. This books has helped me realize how much destruction I am creating for myself by the walls I have built around me and the resistance I have for obstacles in life. In addition to learning about the barriers I have created for myself, I feel so equipped to deal with all future road blocks. The author helps you work through pain, both past, present, & future. Ultimately this book is a guide in finding and living with peace & happiness in your life, all the time. And who doesn't want that?

So many bookmarks and notes from this book! I really enjoyed it; leaned a lot; and will be revisiting soon!

DID NOT FINISH

I have mixed feeling about this book.

I am towards the end of the book now. So.. I LOVED the first few chapters, mentioning how your inner roommate isn't you & why & it goes into explaining that for a few chapters, I loved it. I agree, we're the observer.

But then the chapters started changing, okay, I still liked some of it. But then it started mentioning certain things that seem pretty black & white and treating addictions as if you can simply just, "stop". Just a simple.. one step.. "stop". I do NOT agree with this. & it doesn't really account any other trauma like sexual abuse, domestic abuse, financial abuse, maybe traumatic events like watching someone get their head smashed in. It just uses an example like "your girlfriend broke up with you".
It lacks that.. It lacks going deep into it. It lacks talking about introspection, but i kind of like it, but at the same time i don't. I do agree with what Sadghuru said about introspection. We cannot ignore introspection, but it doesn't have to be something that takes over our lives. & this book doesn't talk at all about introspection.

At first I was like, "Okay, the message of this book can come across as black n white, but I understand the message." As I delve deeper into the book, I just now think it's b/w. Spirituality isn't b/w.
I still love what this book has to offer in the first few chapters like how it says, "If you can experience the peace that occurs when the thoughts stop, then obviously your existence is not dependent upon the act of thinking" basically saying that we are the consciousness.
And, "You're the one who is watching, and that one is pure consciousness. Don't think you'd be free if you just didn't have these kinds of feelings. It's not true. If you can be free even though you're having these kinds of feelings, then you're really free—because there will always be something." & much other helpful stuff

But towards the end I cannot say that i like or love the chapters. I still have to finish it but i think i'm 87% through it.
I still recommend this book, just not the whole book XD

but yeah i also think it's wrong to tell people who they should experience their spiritual experience. In some sense this book is doing that toward the end. it also mentions God in a contradicting way, "god only likes hanging out with happy people" i think? like wtf? stfu. & then goes to say, "god loves all people no matter what" something in that sense. i remember seeing someone say that in a review about this book. I believe in God, but not any of the religions on earth. But i believe there is a creator, i just don't know the name or face. But anyway, thats just contradicting yourself lol.

But yeah some of Michael A. Singer's points i do not agree with. I am disappointed, but what can i expect from a YT man or someone trying to spread THEIR spiritual experience. that's their own experience and THEIR own belief. So that's my take on this boook

overall i think i'll rate it a 5.5/10 or 6.5/10

Nice summary on Buddhist concepts.
It didn’t necessarily change my life, but it built on what was already there.
informative inspiring lighthearted medium-paced

Not a huge fan of super spiritual stuff but the sections about the conscious and how it affects us as a filter was very powerful. Enjoyed most of the book. Some was a bit redundant.
challenging inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.5 stars.
