It's a pretty fascinating endeavor to interpret all the ways a spiral could become a theme in so many horrific ways, keeping a collective spiral of a story that plays off fun batches of interwoven short stories. This one felt more like one-offs even though the point is that the bad is getting worse and the worse is going beyond human comprehension. I feel bad!

I really enjoyed the first book, found it completely original and awesomely creepy! So it was without hesitation that I ordered this, the second in the series and of course the third book too.

However, I was a little let down. In this book I was hoping to find out a little more about the whole "Spiral" phenomenon and the likes, but we are just treated to another four or so short horror stories with no real connection to each other or explanation of the events. I found it irritating how with the turn of a page the characters seemed to just completely forget any of these events even happened, events which would put any normal individual in a mental institution.

With that said, if you enjoyed the first book, you will enjoy this one too. But it's basically just more of the same.

I wonder if everyone here is cursed by the spiral.
(Quote translated from German edition.)

I think this volume was my favorite of the trilogy. Every chapter was a banger with this one, filled with awesome body horror and beautifully creepy imagery. A proper centerpiece for this series.

I'm still interested in seeing how this all ends, and it's impressive how many different horror concepts he was able to stretch out of this idea, but by the end of this second volume the concept has kind of lost it's magic.
