Somewhat outdated, but still an inspiring and realistic book full of writing tips.

Big on building motivation to write and staying with it when things don't go as you dreamed. Light on specific writing advice.

At one point in this book the author discusses how you could write your breakthroughs as one sentence but that no one would appreciate it that way. At first I didn’t get it. And a lot of the early chapters felt like that for me. But the last chapter brought everything together so beautifully that now I feel like I understand what she meant.

Bird by Bird is an entertaining way of wrapping your brain around the concept of writing. As a novice in the field I found this book to be very approachable, easy to follow, and full of takeaways. At times the jokes run a little long and the anecdotes start to pull you out of the mood, but sometimes they keep you motivated to shove on. This book isn't specifically about how to be a writer, it's more of a users manual for getting over the mind sets that most writers fall into, and understanding that you can look at problems and challenges from a different angle.

I have been eyeing this book for a while. I finally decided to read it and I am glad I did. I have been stagnant in my writing lately and have been feeling overwhelmed. This book gave me the little push I needed to get me going again. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of writing, is writing, or is down on themselves for not writing like they feel they should.
