“This is what separates artists from ordinary people: the belief, deep in our hearts, that if we build our castles well enough, somehow the ocean won't wash them away. I think this is a wonderful kind of person to be.”
Even funnier and more poignant and beautiful than when I read it in college.
I’d heard amazing things about this book. I do think Anne Lamott has some great advice and it is well written, but overall her negative view on many things (even if realistic) was too much for me. Much of it was about being published, which I don’t strive for, so that is probably another reason it didn’t live up to the hype for me
Strumming my pain with her fingers.
Lamott perfectly pictured my experience as a writer. With every chapter she dictated my pain, panic, and pathos hand in hand with the healing, calm, and hope that writing brings. Wish I hadn't waited so long to read this!
Lamott's tone and humor are very reminiscent of Jenny Lawson.

Wonderful - smart, practical, warm, irreverent. Makes you realise how rare it is to read a book on writing by someone who can actually write.
This was a really interesting book. Lamott gives great advice for aspiring writers. It is practical and very understandable. She is funny - she likes to emphasize tough subjects by bringing light and humor to them. At times, I felt this was a 4 star book, but my main criticism is she veers off the road a bit too much with her own neurotic confessions. They are amusing at times, but there was just a too many times where I had had enough. Also I was bothered by her characterizations of the participants in the special Olympics and the elderly - even if she was just trying to be funny and tell a good story. These are minor criticisms and I give her a lot of credit for being so open and honest about herself and the writing process. There is a lot to enjoy here.

This book helped me work my way out of a writer’s block funk.
I wish I could see Anne’s physical body sometime and I could see the person that wrote so honestly and clearly, but also so beautifully and humorously. I think she would look exactly like normality.
I like everything about this book. She even references Natalie Goldburg, and I like Natalie. I am overly inspired to write, but I am also ready to write every day, even if it’s pages of junk. She inspires me to be the person looking inward and outward, recording all that they see.
