4.5 Stars. Some really terrific sass and snark that actually caused me to laugh out loud. Other points were a little heavy on the feelings and the magic of writing, but I don't think it's fair to judge the book too harshly for it.
There were so many things I loved about this book! As a writer myself, I found the sections both witty and extremely relatable. I laughed many times, and said “Yep” or “Hell yes” more times than I can count. I found many instances of advice I want to bring back to my own students, to help them with their own writing reluctance.
My one complaint, is I wish the book focused more so on the act of writing than it did on faith. Now this might be my own downfall, as I see now that Anne Lamont often writes about faith and her relationship with God, but I found this to take away from my relation to the novel a bit. I’m sure other people found it to be the opposite though! Just my personal experience.

The amazing Anne Lamott has given a wonderful gift to writers everywhere. It is filled with terrific advice for anyone who wants to put words on paper. But it is Anne's powerful stories about her personal life and her compassionate advice for living an authentic life that make this such a beautiful book.
i find more reasons to love her mind every time i read this
I didn't think that this book was particularly poignant. Perhaps the most charming aspect of Bird by Bird is that Anne Lamott is so hyper-aware of the human condition, that is, that people are not necessarily born wise, clever or beautiful. However, writing is not perfect- just at humans are not perfect- and I think Lamott does a great job at exploring life as the ultimate inspiration in the most accessible way. Although I thought Lamott seemed to be a little self-important at the beginning of the book, I could forgive her quirks because almost magically, I felt compelled to continue writing a story I had stopped writing two years ago. That, in itself, was enough to make Bird by Bird worth it.
Great and honest book about writing. Lamott has a funny and abrasive way of writing about writing and the world in general. Heartfelt, encouraging, but also honest about the embarrassment and agony of writing. What was really cool was when I read a chapter and it directly addressed something that I was encountering in my own writing at that same time.
I did find it fascinating. I am wondering if her insecurities are really common with most writers.
