This one just has to be experienced. It is dreamlike, ethereal but also strangely grounded. Madness.

I can see that The Unconsoled is a book that divides opinion, and I'm not usually one for over-complicated books but I absolutely LOVED this. Ishiguro does a brilliant job of creating a dream-like atmosphere, specifically a kind of anxiety-ridden dream (but not a nightmare) that I'm very familiar with!
Despite the amount of characters and the weird ways the book moves between them and their stories, I found it quite easy to follow and managed to keep track of the relationships and problems that crop up throughout the book. There were also some lines that genuinely made me laugh out loud.
Part of me was hoping for an ending that would tie everything up and make sense of everything... but what would be the fun in that?

"The Unconsoled" is the novel Luis Buñuel would have written; it shares with many of his films a meandering structure, a great deal of dream logic, and scenes of dry absurdity that serve to highlight the ridiculous nature of social norms. It is a long but ultimately rewarding read.

A very odd book that felt to me like i was walking in and out of someone's dream. It has an air of unreality to it, the desperation of not really knowing where one is going in a dream and how events link in surreal and odd ways.
its engaging never the less and maybe i would benefit from a second reading, i just am not sure i am interested enough to try again.

This novel is an enigmatic journey through the subconscious mind, where the narrative unfolds in a dream-like sequence that challenges the boundaries of time and space. The prose is meticulously crafted, with Ishiguro’s signature elegance and restraint, which guides the reader through the protagonist’s complex inner world.
The novel’s strength lies in its ability to evoke a profound sense of disorientation and introspection. As the story progresses, the reader, much like the protagonist, grapples with the elusive nature of the plot, which seems to mirror the chaotic undercurrents of modern life. The characters are intricately drawn, and their interactions weave a tapestry of themes such as memory, regret, and the elusive quest for fulfillment.
However, this complexity can also be the source of confusion. The narrative’s non-linear progression and ambiguous events may leave readers searching for a solid footing within the storyline. This deliberate obfuscation is both the book’s allure and its challenge, inviting a deep engagement that may require patience and openness to the unconventional.
In conclusion, “The Unconsoled” is a masterful exploration of the human psyche, offering a reading experience that is as bewildering as it is enlightening. It’s a book that doesn’t just tell a story but rather evokes a mood, a feeling, that lingers long after the last page is turned. While it may not provide all the answers, it certainly sparks the questions that resonate with the complexities of our own lives.
