Genuinely the most frustrating book I’ve ever read. The characters are so unlikeable, the plot is all over the place and the whole story is an anxious fever dream — but that’s the point. It invokes the same reaction that you get when you see someone in a film make a terrible choice and you know how it’s going to end but you kind of enjoy the messiness of it all. I don’t know if I’d recommend this, especially as it’s quite different from Ishiguro’s other novels, but I certainly didn’t dislike it.

A fever dream of low-stakes Scott’s Tots scenarios.

The stream of consciousness feeling reminded me of Woolf's To the Lighthouse, which I think helped me continue even during the difficult bits. The feelings that the book evokes are strong, but not always memorable. Ishiguro is a great talent.
